LiftMaster Cable & Drum Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install LiftMaster-compatible cable and drum sets on our trucks, and most replacements in Los Angeles run between $155 and $295, parts and labor included. That’s the installed range we actually quote on the job, not an online teaser price. The usual story we hear on the phone sounds like this: the door started jerking on one side last week, then made a grinding noise, and now it won’t open at all. What you’re describing is almost always a cable that has slipped off its drum, or a drum that has worn to the point where the cable can’t seat properly.

The cable and drum work as a pair. The drum is the grooved spool mounted at each end of the torsion tube above your door. The cable wraps around it and runs down to the bottom bracket on each side of the door. When you open the door, the spring turns the tube, the drums wind the cables, and the door goes up evenly. When one side of that system fails, the door tilts, binds, and the opener starts working against itself. If you hear the opener straining and the door leaning, stop using it and call us. Marcus Ellery will tell you the same thing he tells every homeowner in the San Fernando Valley: “Tell me what it’s doing, and I’ll tell you what it needs.”

Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To

LiftMaster cables and drums are not one-size-fits-all, and matching the right set to your door is where a lot of generic repair jobs go wrong. The residential lines we service most often in Los Angeles are the LiftMaster Professional series, the Estate series, and the older Formula I and Formula II models. The drums themselves differ by door weight and spring configuration, not by opener model, which is a common point of confusion. Your opener brand doesn’t determine your drum size, but if you have a LiftMaster opener, there’s a good chance the door itself was installed by a Chamberlain Group dealer, and those doors typically use a 4-inch drum for standard lift and a tapered drum for high-lift track.

The practical way to identify what you have is to look at the drum itself. A 4-inch drum is about the diameter of a soda can, a 5-inch drum is closer to a coffee mug. The cable diameter is usually 1/8 inch or 5/32 inch. OEM LiftMaster parts are the safest match, and we keep genuine and quality aftermarket equivalents on the truck, so you’re not waiting on a parts order. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with LiftMaster, and we’ll tell you plainly when an aftermarket cable-and-drum set is just as good and when it isn’t.

Signs Your LiftMaster Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • Door tilts or lifts unevenly. One cable has stretched or slipped, so one side travels faster than the other. Within a few cycles the door binds against the track.
  • You can see a frayed or kinked cable. Look at the cable from about three feet away. If wires are poking out or the cable looks twisted instead of straight, it’s rated for replacement, not repair.
  • Grinding or scraping noise when the door moves. The cable has jumped its groove in the drum and is now rubbing against the drum flange or the torsion tube.
  • Door drops hard or hangs at an angle when disengaged. This is a dangerous condition. It means one cable is no longer load-bearing, and the full door weight is on one side. Do not stand under it.
  • The drum itself shows visible wear. Aluminum drums in Los Angeles garages wear unevenly over time, especially near the coast or in hillside communities where salt air and dust accelerate that. If the groove looks polished or misshapen, the new cable won’t seat right, which is why we replace the pair together.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, expect to pay $155 to $295 for a LiftMaster cable and drum replacement, installed. The spread depends on whether we’re replacing one drum or both, whether the door is single-car or double-car, and whether your existing cables are standard lift or high-lift. The price we quote is the price you pay. That’s the Kingswell Way, and it’s one of the four standards every Bramwell location works to: a written price before any work starts, a real arrival window, a clean job site, and a written guarantee.

Every cable and drum replacement includes new cables, the drum or drums, recalibration of the spring tension so the door balances properly, and a check of the bottom brackets where cables anchor. We’ll also confirm the opener’s limit settings haven’t drifted while the door was running uneven. The work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If that cable or drum fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That commitment is in writing, not a phone promise.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: look at both cables, look at the drums, and look at whether the door is visibly leaning. That’s it. What we’d ask you not to do is touch the bottom bracket, loosen anything under tension, or try to re-seat a cable that’s slipped. The torsion spring above your door holds enough energy to lift a full-size truck tailgate with one hand, and releasing that energy incorrectly is how people get hurt. There’s no shade-tree fix for a failed LiftMaster drum. It’s a part that wears out, and when it does, it gets replaced, not patched.

If it’s a weekend or late evening and your door is stuck with the cable off, call us at (213) 996-0290. A live person answers, day or night, and we’ll get a technician out with the parts on the truck.
