Amarr cable and drum replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $155 – $295 installed, parts and labor included, and we stock Amarr-compatible cables and drums on our trucks for same-day service across most of LA County. You’ll usually find out something’s wrong when the door starts climbing unevenly, jerks halfway up, or makes a grinding sound from the roller track area. The cable is the braided steel line that runs along each side of the door and connects to the drum, the round spool mounted above the door that winds and unwinds the cable as the door moves.
Here’s the situation we see most often in Los Angeles: the door has been working fine for years, then one morning it shudders and stops about two feet off the ground. What’s happened is usually a frayed cable that finally snapped, or a drum that’s lost its grip on the cable. Either way, the door is now lifting from one side only, and that puts dangerous strain on everything else, including the torsion spring.
Which Amarr Models This Applies To
We work on the full Amarr residential lineup: the Lincoln and Heritage series, the Classica and Stratford steel doors, and the Olympus and Hillcrest carriage-house lines that are common in Los Angeles neighborhoods from Sherman Oaks to Torrance. If you’re not sure what series you have, check the label on the inside edge of the door panel or the sticker on the track near the motor mount. Amarr typically prints the model and serial there.
One compatibility gotcha we run into regularly: Amarr uses different drum diameters depending on door height and cable length. A 7-foot door takes a different drum than an 8-foot door, and a door with a low-headroom track uses a different drum again. If someone installs the wrong drum size, the cable either stacks unevenly or slips off within weeks. We match drums to your specific Amarr series, door weight, and track configuration, not just “close enough.”
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Amarr’s original cables are good quality, but they’re not magic. Quality aftermarket cables made from the same high-tensile steel, in the right diameter and length, perform identically and cost less. The real difference isn’t the cable, it’s the installation. A cable that’s the wrong length or installed with too much slack will fail again quickly. We use the correct cable diameter for your Amarr model and tension it properly before we call the job done.
One more note for clarity: Bramwell Garage Doors Los Angeles is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Amarr, but we service their doors every week and keep the right parts on hand.

Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- Door lifts crooked or hangs uneven. One cable has stretched, frayed, or slipped off the drum, so one side of the door is doing all the work. This is the most common call we get in Los Angeles, and it’s usually the cable, not the spring.
- You can see frayed strands or a snapped cable hanging loose. Once steel cable strands start separating, the cable is on borrowed time. A snapped cable can whip when it lets go, which is why you shouldn’t try to pull it out by hand while the door is under tension.
- Grinding or scraping noise from the top corners while the door moves. The drum is worn or the cable is binding up in the groove. In Los Angeles’s dry, dusty conditions, grit works its way into the drum groove and accelerates wear, especially on doors that get cycled four or five times a day.
- Door jerks or shudders mid-travel. The cable is slipping on the drum momentarily, then catching. Every slip wears both the cable and the drum groove, so the problem gets worse the longer it goes unaddressed.
- Cable has jumped off the drum and is wrapped around the shaft. This tells us something upstream caused slack in the cable, often a broken spring. If that’s the case, the spring has to be addressed at the same time, or the new cable will do the same thing.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, expect to pay $155 – $295 for a cable and drum replacement, including parts and labor. Where you land in that range depends on a few things: whether it’s one cable or both, whether the drum itself needs replacing or can be cleaned up and reused, and whether the spring has failed alongside it. A one-side cable replacement on a standard Amarr door usually sits at the lower end; both cables plus both drums on a double-wide door runs higher.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. What you can safely do: visually inspect the cables for fraying, check whether a cable has jumped off the drum, and take note of whether the door looks level when it’s about halfway up. That’s useful information for whoever you call. What you should not do: try to re-seat a cable on the drum or remove a frayed cable yourself. Those cables are under the full tension of the torsion spring, and that spring can release with enough force to cause serious injury. We’ve had Los Angeles homeowners show us doors where a well-meaning attempt with pliers turned a $155 cable job into a full cable, drum, and spring replacement. The math doesn’t work in your favor.
When you call us at (213) 996-0290, we’ll ask what the door’s doing, we’ll show up in the window we promised, and we’ll put a written price in front of you before any work starts. The number you hear is the number you’ll pay. If the repair fails within a year, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and fix it at no charge, in writing. That’s the Kingswell way, and it’s how we’ve operated in Los Angeles since 2001.
FAQs
We typically see 7 to 10 years out of Amarr cables in Los Angeles, though doors facing the afternoon sun or cycling many times a day can wear through faster. The dry, dusty air here grinds fine grit into the drum groove and cable strands, and that’s what shortens lifespan more than the steel itself failing.
Once a cable is frayed or snapped, it needs replacing, not repair. Splices don’t hold on a cable that’s cycling thousands of pounds of tension daily. If the drum is only lightly worn, it can sometimes be kept; if the groove is chewed up, replacing it at the same time is the honest move. Call (213) 996-0290 and we’ll tell you straight what’s needed.
Most Amarr cable and drum replacements take 30 to 60 minutes once we’re on site, assuming the spring is healthy. If the spring also needs work, figure another 30 minutes or so. You’ll get a real arrival window when you book, so you’re not waiting around half the day.
Yes. Our Los Angeles trucks carry the common Amarr cable diameters and drum sizes so we can complete the repair on the first visit in most cases. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers, so we can handle the opener side of things if that’s part of what’s going on. Call (213) 996-0290 and tell us what the door’s doing, and we’ll tell you what it needs before we ever roll a truck.
