Craftsman Roller Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Craftsman-compatible garage door rollers throughout Los Angeles, with most replacements running $130 – $260 including parts and labor. Same-day service is available in most cases because we carry the common sizes on the truck. You’ll usually discover a roller has failed when the door starts grinding against the track, wobbling side to side as it moves, or making a sound like a shopping cart with a stuck wheel every time it passes a certain point. If any of that sounds familiar, you’ve found the right page.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To

Craftsman garage doors, like most residential doors, ride on rollers that come in two standard configurations: 2-inch rollers for standard residential tracks and 3-inch rollers for heavier double-car doors. The shaft diameter is almost always 7/16 of an inch, regardless of which Craftsman model you have. The compatibility gotcha we see often in Los Angeles: owners buy a roller set online, then realize the stem length doesn’t match their hinge depth. Some Craftsman doors use longer stems to clear thicker hinges, and installing a short-stem roller into a deep hinge means the roller binds against the hinge face and carves a groove into the track. We always measure the old roller against the replacement before anything goes in.

Bramwell Garage Doors Los Angeles is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Craftsman or its parent companies. When it comes to the part itself, Craftsman does not manufacture rollers – these are commodity parts made by the same suppliers that build for Clopay, Amarr, and Wayne Dalton. The branded box is not meaningfully different from a quality aftermarket equivalent. What matters is the bearing. A sealed-bearing nylon roller will outlast and out-quiet an unsealed steel roller every time, and for the Los Angeles market, we fit sealed nylon as standard unless an owner wants an upgrade to higher-cycle bearings.

Signs Your Craftsman Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • The door shudders or jerks as it moves. A worn roller bearing stops spinning smoothly and starts flat-spotting, catching at the same point in every cycle. You’ll feel the resistance through the door even if you can’t see what’s causing it.
  • A scraping or metal-on-metal sound on one side. When a nylon tire wears through or cracks off, the bare steel core rides directly on the track. This is audible and it is slowly gouging the track, which turns a cheap roller job into a more expensive track repair if ignored long enough.
  • The door leans or sits crooked in the opening. One failed roller throws off the weight distribution. The door starts pulling toward the worn side, and the cable tension on the opposite side increases. Left alone, this uneven load shortens the life of the torsion spring.
  • Visible cracks, flat spots, or missing chunks on the roller wheel. Los Angeles heat plus the ozone near major freeways ages nylon faster than homeowners expect. We see plastic rollers that have turned brittle and cracked after six or seven years, especially in neighborhoods like the San Fernando Valley where summer attic temperatures stress everything in the garage.
  • A rumbling or rattling that gets louder when the door is moving at speed. Bearings with worn races don’t fail silently. The rattle echoes through the track and into the house, which is usually when someone calls us. That’s the right time, because a roller that has come off the stem entirely can wedge the door in the track.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, a full roller replacement runs $130 – $260 depending on how many rollers the door uses, whether we’re swapping all of them or just the failed side, and whether the door needs nylon or steel. Most standard two-car doors have ten to twelve rollers. A single-car door often has eight. The price we quote is installed – parts and labor together – and it is the same number you’ll see on the invoice. Before we touch anything, we walk the door with you, show you which rollers are worn, and hand you a written price. If you decide to proceed, the price doesn’t move. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and it’s been the standard across every Bramwell location since 2001.

Every roller replacement we do in Los Angeles carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a covered roller fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge – that commitment is in writing, not something a technician says on the way to the truck.

DIY or Call Us?

Rollers on the top and sides of the door are low-risk parts to inspect. With the door closed, you can look for cracking nylon, listen for grinding at specific points, and pull the manual release to feel how smoothly the door moves by hand. What you should not do is remove a roller from the bottom bracket. The bottom roller is under cable tension, and the bracket it sits in anchors the lifting cable to the door. Removing that roller without releasing tension properly can whip the cable or drop the door. If the bottom roller is the one that’s failed, call us. If it’s a mid-track roller and you’re comfortable with the work, you can do it – but check the stem length against the old roller before you install anything.

Most Los Angeles homeowners we talk to would rather have it done once, correctly. If you’d like us to look at it, call (213) 996-0290. We’ll tell you over the phone what it’s likely to be, then confirm with a written price on site before any work starts.
